"Its true that are no other fully bipedal primates
roaming the earth, but given the example of convergence
in a number of other species over the long span of life
on Earth(1), I don’t think its implausible that another
intelligent biped could evolve. Its also worth noting that
humans are, in evolutionary terms, still a relatively new
experiment"
Don't forget that our original primate ancestors did stem off a number of bipedal peoples/species. It's just we were the only ones to make it this far.

This reminds me of an article by Isaac Asimov called <em>Planets Have an Air About Them</em>, republished in his collection "Only A Trillion" - well worth picking up though it's out of print. In the text Asimov details the very basics needed, biochemically, for life to exist. Then he applies the relative quantities of those elements to show that statistically, an oxygen/hydrogen system is the most likely to evolve life by a humongously long margin. It has to do with the nature in which hydrogen and oxygen are able to combine and split. Other systems are possible (Sulfur/Hydrogen Suflide, e.g.) by nearly impossible from a temperature/gravity standpoint. If a bipedal primate seems to be too anthropomorphic to be true, at least from Asimov's reasoning, the atmospheric and environmental requirements for extraterrestrial life forms are likely to be highly similar to ours. Could extraterrestrial life forms evolve from an oxygen/hydrogen system into plant-like and animal-like roles?
