Vortex UFO over King’s Dominion

“This is the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen. It was a circular formation in the sky that stayed over King’s Dominion [Amusement Park in Eastern Virginia] today for about 10 minutes. We looked away for a minute or two and then looked back and it was no longer there.”

The poster himself explains that

“There really was a smoke ring in the sky, and if you look through the comments or watch the attached news video, you will see that many other people saw the same thing in the sky (and even had religious experiences due to it). I am convinced now that this smoke ring did come from the volcano ride. There was not much wind that day, so the smoke ring somehow stayed intact . . . I’m not sure how, but it did. I have spoken with others from my work who were there and they have said they witnessed the same smoke ring actually come from the Volcano ride. I hope this clears up some of the questions out there.”

This is the same phenomenon more widely known in the Viborg “Jellyfish” UFO, and which happens all around the world, including Brazil, of which an image follows below.

Smoke rings can be that surprising. In Portuguese, see “Os OVNIs de Vórtice” for more photos and cases.

I somehow always thought smoke rings would look — I don’t know — kind of smokey. This image seems to have a distinctly sharp edge structure and is a little darker than the smoke and/or clouds which are around it. I say what it is, I just don’t see it as being smoke.

Check the links for more images of large smoke rings that look indeed solid. It depends on a series of factors, but as I wrote, they can look that surprising.

Not to say this isn’t a smoke ring, but don’t smoke rings usually “move?” I mean, there’s no mention of the fact that it’s literally just sitting there. I’ve never seen a smoke ring do that. Again, this isn’t to say it’s not a smoke ring, and that such a thing isn’t possible. I’d say that’s hella more likely than extra terrestrials, but it seems strange that it wouldn’t change shape, size, location at all, and then just vanish.

Could this phenomenon be recreated by shootin the video from below a clean piece of plate glass with the ring etched (or otherwise placed) on the glass surface? That would allow for the camera to zoom in and out, and would allow for the focal point to change to other areas in the sky, while the ring object would appear to stay in the same place.

I have seen a machine on the back of a truck at burning man that generates these rings exactly. It involved about a 4 foot tall 3-4″ diameter column of kerosene that gets ignited and ejected out of the tube with a specific velocity dictated by the air pressure applied to the base of the tube as the fuel is ignited.

This causes a smoke ring vortex that stays around in the sky a very long time. It looks exactly like the kings dominion video here.

Here is a link, it is a much closer to the ring generator, but at the end of the clip, you will see the same hovering ring.

It is possible that a lucky firing from the volcano there could cause this effect. Though I have to say that is unlikely.

More likely, someone in the parking lot or from a nearby field used a ring launcher like the one I have linked in this thread.

The most amazing part is how the smoke is actually rotating (on its z axis of the donut shape of the smoke ring. It is not visible in the videos but a close up the vortex along the smoke ring is the most amazing part.

Ever play with smoke rings? They often look like rigid translucent rings; a sharp-edged image. If you use black smoke, they look dark grey.

Depending on how you tap the launcher diaphragm, you can make them move fast, slow, or stop in place. You can make them turbulent like a whirling cloud, but those kind fly apart and don’t last very long. The clean rings last nearly forever (they’re laminar flows, not turbulent.)

I have seen these exact same rings over K.D. and thought they were UFOs….only later finding out for myself they are the smoke rings from the Valcano. Also, perhaps the people th at had “religous experiences” honestly just needed a venue to make a change in their life….

A couple of years ago I built a giant vortex cannon out of a trash can with a hole cut in the bottom and a large sheet of latex stretched over the top. It was basically an over sized Airzooka. When it was filled with smoke and fired straight up you could get a very similar standing ring as long as there was no wind and there were no convection currents from pavement or anything else that was hot.

Back in the 60s I used to see these black smoke rings produced by explosive devices that were designed to make an atomic-bomb-type mushroom cloud (though not as big as a real one) for part of Army basic training. When the rest of the cloud had dissipated, the black vortex ring remained in the sky for a long time. The top of an actual atomic mushroom cloud is also a vortex ring with other smoke around it, so it was a pretty good simulation in that way.
